Defensive Scoring

Most fantasy football pundits will say drafting a kicker or defense in anything other than the last rounds of a draft is bad strategy. This is for many reasons. For instance, from year to year, predicting which kicker will score well is almost impossible. Secondly, the differential between your top kicker who scores say 200 fantasy points and a middle of the road kicker who scores 150 amounts to basically three points a game. And while points are precious, the difference is not great.

As for the defenses, traditionally, they are not high scoring, with a modest allotment for either points allowed or yardage, and perhaps some minor points for turnovers. Ofrcourse, if you are lucky enough to get a return for a TD, then that is a great advantage to the owner.

But why do defenses get discounted as a scoring threat? To add to the flavor of the league, consider a modified scoring system to increase the value of defenses and make them more than just an after thought. For example take a look at this example:

Scoring:
Opponent score
shut out - 15 pts
1 - 7 score - 10 pts
8 - 14 score - 7 pts
15 - 21 score - 5 pts
22 - 28 score - 2 pts
28 and up - 0 pts

Sacks - 2 pts
Interceptions - 4 pts
Fumble recoveries - 4 pts

This will greatly increase the scoring of defenses in your league and increase the challenge and the fun. After all, what is the point of even having defenses on the teams if they don't score.
